Ooooh! Fish!

Cute building

I saw fish in the river! A whole school of tiny black ones when I was walking home from work.* Yep, the fish spotting viking stikes again.

There was a man holding a small child on the edge of a river landing and when I looked where they were looking, I saw a disturbance on the water's surface and there they were! Not as impressive as the school of large silver fish I saw last year, but fish are fish.

Don't know why seeing fish thrills me. It's possibly partly because the Yarra River (particularly around where I live) is not the healthiest watercourse around, so it's nice to know it can still sustain life. But even as a small child when I had never even heard of the Yarra, I was always looking at the colour picture in my mother's gardening book of goldfish in a pond.

* Yes, work again.

Obviously I'd prefer to be on holidays still, but it was good to see my friends at work. I also think it will be good for me to have some routine back in my life to give me some structure again.

I wore my pedometer to and from work. The round trip is a smidge under 6 kilometers. This is silly, but I'm pleased to know the route on the south side of the river is not significantly longer than the north side as I had thought.

I had a soak in the bath tonight and exfoliated off half my body skin. Smooooooth.

PS I have the word 'canderflabble' stuck in my head... (I'll tell you what it means next time, unless you're too impatient and have to go ask Google...or you know already, you clever clogs.)

Soooorry you are back at work, it will all be back to usual within a few days, never mind a month off is pretty special....gives you time to hop of the treadmill and think clearly about what you are doing and where you are headed.
I have a few gold fish in a HUGE round ceramic pot on my deck, they have been there for 3 years and are big and healthy...maybe you could get some.

Hmm, I've never seen fish in the Yarra, but then if I think about it, I've never tried to look! :) Naturally I'll have to try looking at some point now.

I was too, umm, eager to find out what canderflabble meant, so I Googled it. :) Wow, there you go! Cute.

I'm going back to work next week. The manager at the store I was at last year specifically asked to have me back apparently, which was nice to hear! It'll be good for me to get a bit of structure back into my life, too. Can end up feeling a bit lost at sea in some ways without it sometimes!

Hello Abbeysmum. I certainly did get off the treadmill and do some thinking about the future. I'm feeling much calmer and more positive about my workplace now (although I'm not sure how long it will last!)

I could get some fish but I know I'm too lazy to clean the bowl and change the water.

Hello Julian. I look for fish in the Yarra often and am mostly unrewarded so I wouldn't go making any plans if I were you!

Gah, now I have canderflabble back in my head!

Good to hear you've made such a positive impression at work. It's great to know your bosses think you're on the right track.

Back before I took early retirement I used to walk to work sometimes. More frequently if I was under pressure at work and needed to get my thoughts in order, or get my mental balance ready for the day ahead.

It took me around 30 minutes or so of brisk walking, and part of my gleefulness was to try and vary my route, if only slightly, every day. My only 'rule' was not to have to walk too far away from the direction I wanted to go. I really got a charge out of 'discovering' a new route, even if it was only crossing a road in a different place to usual.

The best routes involved walking through one of several parks or alongside the river or canal (Abbey Park, Stokeswood Park, The Rally, the River Soar or the Grand Union Canal, in Leicester UK). I would often notice small things, like your fish, or particular birds, or architectural details and these would lift my day too. Sometimes it was enough just noticing the progression of the seasons on the green stuff around me.

I can't say that the walks saved my sanity, but they certainly saved my happiness.

Thanks for your blogging - its great to see someone else appreciating life.

Hello Evelyn. Thank you and thanks for stopping by. It makes me happy just writing this stuff and taking the photos but I'm glad other people enjoy it too.

Hi there DiscoveredJoys. Thank you for popping in too. I was nodding my head as I read your comment, thinking, "Yep, that's exactly what I do!". Whether it's going to work or the shops, I like to vary my route and actually properly look at my surroundings, rather than just hiding in my head thinking about whether I need milk or the crappy job I'm working on. It sounds so simple, but it really does make a difference to life.

I went back to work last week after being out for two weeks (for the first time EVER) and it was NOT fun. I was pretty much slammed until the weekend. Glad things have calmed down a bit.

I hope your transition will be smoother than mine!

Hi Carla. Man, that sucks. I bet you won't be taking another two weeks off in a hurry. That REALLY sucks. I'm glad things have calmed down for you too. Fortunately, my week has been fairly cruisy so far. It's not a busy time of the year in commercial law.
