In praise of woolly socks and Billy Idol

I got caught in the rain without an umbrella today. By the time I got home the damp had soaked through my sneakers and into my socks. My jeans were very soggy along the bottom third of each leg.

It was nice to change into dry clothes when I got home. I especially enjoyed pulling on a pair of new, thick socks. After months of thong (flip flop) weather, it's nice to have my toes cosy in woolly socks and to rug up just a little when I go out. I'm looking forward to wearing my new gloves and boots.

I'm confident my enthusiasm for extra layers will wane once winter arrives, however.

Thank you, Billy

I went back the gym yesterday after a (cough) six month absence. I wasn't as unfit as I expected and I even managed to run for a bit, but I owe some of that to Billy Idol. Let me explain...

You see, whenever I listen to To Be a Lover, I can run like the wind, even after six months of no running, even after a bunch of lunges that left my quads feeling like noodles (even if it was only for five minutes!). That song is magic for me. I have other high-energy songs on my iPod, but they just don't do it for me like To Be a Lover. I'm going to listen to it on repeat during every gym visit.

I don't think it has anything to do with the fact I was mad about Billy Idol in my teen years...that sneer...the pelvic thrusts...the leather...the bare chest...I listened to his greatest hits all the way home too. (Yes, I have them on my iPod. What of it?)

PS The not-so-gleeful bit is that today I could barely roll over in bed, much less get out of it. I've been waddling about like an arthritic penguin. (I probably wouldn't have got so damp in the rain if I'd been able to walk at my usual cracking pace.) But it's good pain. Good. Pain. *grimaces*

Billy's sneer never did it for me, but I LOVE his music. Thanks for posting the link to the song - it was fun! I also love Rebel Yell.

Hope you're feeling less stiff now. I can't calculate how long it's been since you posted this because of the challenge of time conversion, which I still haven't mastered.

You do know about the miracle that is epsom salts, right? Soak, Jayne, soak!

Hey FF. Yeah, it was mostly about the music for me too, not his hotness.

I'm feeling marginally less stiff today. I'm still waddling and I can't get up out of my chair without making a little grunty noise, like an old person. People are laughing at me.

I had a long soak in a hot bath, but without the aid of epsom salts. I think I'll have to pick some up on the way home tonight.

You're thinking winter ... we're thinking summer. In fact, I just pulled my flip-flops out today ... gave them a trial run to the mail box. And just like that ... the sun came out and the skies cleared. OK ... maybe not quite that dramatic but ... it was a lovely day and made me anxious for summer.

Good for you getting back to the gym ... wish I had some of that resolve. Perhaps I'll think of you this week and get my behind out of this chair and into the gym. We have one ... right here ... free of charge ... so what's my excuse, huh? In a word ... lazy! I'll think of you ... oh yes I will ... I will ... I will! Stay tuned ...

Yuck! Getting soaked is no fun (well, most of the time, anyway!). I don't like the feeling of wet feet in wet socks. Comfy warm socks on cold feet is a great feeling though (until it's been winter for a while and you start wishing for the warm weather again, anyway!).

Gotta love lunges. My trainer's had me doing front kicks for a while now, and sometimes I have to do a variant where I semi-squat (with one leg back), then come up and kick. Today she decided I was ready for the next level, apparently, and got me to hold a 5kg medicine ball while doing the same thing. After that and the other leg work, my legs were well on the way to noodle stage!

After going to swing class tonight on top of all that, I think I might be joining you on the arthritic penguin bench tomorrow. ;) Hope you're feeling less stiff soon!
