Good news!

My building sold at auction two weeks ago, and I have been in a state of uncomfortable uncertainty since. But good news! I found out today the new owner wants to sign us all up to new 12-month leases. Hooray! I get to stay in my sunny little inner city haven!

It's such a relief and I'm thrilled to bits. The only thing that could possibly dim my joy is that the rent is going up (amount TBA) and I will probably be forced to rent out the spare room. But at least I have the option of getting a flatmate to share the rent, hey?

I adore living on my own, but the more I think about the prospect of sharing again, the more enthusiastic - or perhaps the less apprehensive - I am about it. There can be positives about sharing - including the potential for making a great new friend - but the benefit that appeals to me most right now is the extra $100+ in my hand each week.

Finding the right person to share with will be the key, but maybe that could be fun too. I want to share with a guy, so I might meet a lot of (hopefully not creepy) men...

The view

The photo above is the view from my lounge room window. When I look out the window from where I'm sitting now, the full moon is staring back at me.

More of 333

I dropped into 333 Collins Street Monday afternoon to admire the gorgeousness of the domed vault. Here's a couple of better shots of it than the one I posted on Sunday, with bonus Christmas tree top.

Soooo glad to hear you have a good outcome from the sale of the building and can stay put, where it suits you.

Very happy to learn that you have been spared the hassle of moving.
Raise in these tough times? I find it perplexing.
Your idea for sharing is an exciting one.

Hi Jayne: I'm glad you get to stay in your apartment. I hope you find a good roommate. I had a great roommate in college, and I had a roommate I couldn't even speak to in law school. Choose carefully!

Your view is great and a nice part of town also. But, how do you find yourself a good housemate? I too have a spare room and with the economic turmoil have thought that maybe, one day, another person might be a necessity. And as for the Collins Street address. I just cannot believe anyone would have wanted to demolish it. No doubt for it to be replaced by something, oh, I don't know, something in beige or a pastel.

Hello abbeysmum. Yes, me too. I'm so happy here.

Hello Surendra. Thanks for stopping by. It does seem perplexing that rents are going up when times are so tough but there is a severe shortage of properties so landlords are in the driver's seat (people are even offering to pay more than the asking price). It's the laws of supply and demand, I suppose.

I can't complain about my rent going up because it hasn't increased at all in more than 5 years, which is very rare, and the rental is low compared with other properties in the area. The landlord is also going to tizzy the place up a bit.

Hello Marelisa. I have had some good flatmates and some not so good ones too. It's just a shame it's not always possible to tell them apart at first, hey? We shall see...

Hi Anonymous. My plan is to put the word out through people I know (online and in the 'real world') that I have a room to rent and if that doesn't produce anyone suitable, then I'm going to have to advertise, which can be fraught. Do you think it would be over the top to subject potential tenants to a psycological test? Can I get police checks done, do you know? ;)

I hope you don't have to resort to getting a tenant but sadly I think the economic downturn is a long way from over.

I know! How could people even think about knocking down such a beautiful building?! Madness.

Ooh wow; I like the photos (and the Xmas tree is a nice touch :) ). Great to hear that you don't have to move, and hope you manage to find someone good! Can't think of anyone suitable to suggest to you, but if anything/one comes up, I'll let you know. :) A psych test? Why not? ;> (It vaguely reminds me of the interview-like process the existing housemates of a place put potential housemates through in a movie called The Spanish Apartment. It was rather amusing. ;) )

One of my housemates is moving out soon too (depending on when she can find a place), so we're going to be in the market for a compatible person at some point ourselves. Here's hoping we can find someone good as well!

Hi Julian. I didn't see the Spanish Apartment. I'd hire it for some ideas if my DVD player was working...

Hope you find someone good too. Probably plenty of people looking.

To help you select a new tenant you could familiarise yourself Dr Robert Hare's work on identifying psychopaths.
